The volume and diversity of available data has dramatically increased in all facets of life, industry and academia alike. This rapid increase is due to the great advances in data generation, data acquisition and data accessibility. Massive data volume prompts us in scientific disciplines on how to extract useful information and on how to foster research. Similarly, wide access to a multitude of customer information and product use presents business opportunities to companies of all sizes.
Practitioners used to feel lost in the data masses due to the lack of proper data management. However, this has changed with the recent advances in big data technologies; business world and the scientific community are now able to explore at great strides how to make sense of available data and turn them into actionable insights.
