This is a good read. I find this study inspirational and informative.  I have lived in the some of saddest states and can qualify their findings. Sometimes you feel as you are making up your assessment yet, instinctively you know the truth.

The saddest states reported in “Do You Live in the Saddest State” were best on emotional and good health with surroundings having impact. The findings point out from the research performed by latest Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index data reveals that “Alaskans are happier with their lives than any other state’s residents, according to the latest Gallup Healthways Well-Being Index data. Residents recorded the highest sense of purpose in the country, one of the poll’s top indicators of well-being.”

Dan Witters, research director at the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index said,  “Hawaii, in the second-happiest spot, is also known for its natural beauty, and unlike Alaska, its hospitable year-round climate. This could help contribute to physical health, and in turn, well-being.”

“Hawaii, a year-round outdoor state, is in the top two for exercise [rates],” he said. “It does make it easier for people to get out and move naturally when you’re in places with good weather.”

The view might not hurt, either. “Emotional health is a good example [of this],” he said. “Daily happiness, daily smiling and laughter; daily stress and worry; clinical diagnoses of depression. What you see outside of you, outdoors, can and does lend a buoyancy to those kinds of emotional health metrics.”

Interestingly, the state with the worst physical health ranked as the unhappiest in the nation overall. Although physical health (whether driven by weather or not) isn’t the only thing that matters.

Interestingly, the state with the worst physical health ranked as the unhappiest in the nation overall was West Virginia then Kentucky. There is  a correlation with health and activity and happiness.

The Saddest States in order are:

  1. West Virginia
  2. Kentucky
  3. Indiana
  4. Ohio
  5. Mississippi

They found California ranked 39, Texas 41, New Mexico 42, Colorado 45, Montana 46, Wyoming 47, South Dakota 48, Hawaii 49 and Alaska number 50.
