Later this year DoD will solicit bids for the two manufacturing solutions. As set asides may dwindle innovation and technologies are growing solutions in sourcing. The opportunity in new manufacturing can boost a company gravitas. The news out of Defense is “DoD Sets Up Institutes for Manufacturing” to bring new innovation to the weaponry development that also has commercial implications and usage.
For those in manufacturing with capacity and infrastructure to manage high level demands this is a good news. “The Pentagon will oversee two White House-backed manufacturing institutes, one focusing on digitizing the manufacturing process and another on producing lightweight, modern metals.”
“The Pentagon will put $50 million toward each project, according to a statement. Other government agencies will contribute $20 million for each effort, as well.”
“The digital manufacturing institute “will address the life cycle of digital data interchanged among myriad design, engineering, manufacturing and maintenance systems, and flowing across a networked supply chain,” the statement said.”
“The lightweight and modern metals manufacturing institute “will accelerate the introduction and expand the use of more affordable products made with high strength-to-weight alloys that improve performance and reduce energy consumption.”
“The two institutes will be made up of top manufacturing companies and research universities.”
The importance of manufacturing is important to any nation. A nation that produces lessens the importation and increases exports. The Census reported in May of this year that the “Nation’s international trade deficit in goods and services decreased to $38.8 billion in March from $43.6 billion (revised) in February, as imports decreased more than exports.”
The capacity building of these two programs will also facilitate job growth, innovation and potentially harness other business lines from these platforms. The need for increased manufacturing is what pulled the U.S. out of the recession in 1926 in which Ford jumpstarted the Model T as one example. The manufacturing of weapons and repair provided jobs to men and women creating growth. This is not to suggest war is an answer but manufacturing is a solutions to economic growth and job creation. In chaos answers are revealed where ideas and funding collide for evolutionary changes.
