Can Research Define Sustainability in Corporations When Curation is Needed

The research on sustainability within corporations are continually reported. The challenge is determining what “sustainability” means and how it is enacted within the corporate structure.  The term to date is innocuous blending a degree of reporting and actions.  The study that suggests that “Sustainability Contributes To Confidence In Corporations”  from the Holmes Report is vital when the underlying actions of sustainability are discussed.

“The survey results showed a clear link between corporate communications around sustainability efforts and corporate performance and reputation.” This identifies my underlying proposition that sustainability has become a brand and not a value that pushes across the ecosystem for a defined operational changes reflected in process, system and measurement.

The study’s “key findings:
• 91 percent of respondents said they believe that it was important for corporations to behave sustainably in 2013 and beyond, and that such behavior was critical to companies’ long-term success;
• 81 percent believe companies should report on their sustainability efforts on an ongoing basis rather than through a static report;
• 82 percent believe that a company can regain public trust through an honest and transparent reporting of its efforts to be more sustainable, even if that reporting highlights where it falls short of its goals; and
• 84 percent believe greater visibility into corporate sustainability efforts will increase trust in a company.”

“The firm says the goal of corporate sustainability is to manage the environmental, economic and social effects of a corporation’s operations so it is profitable over the long-term while acting in a responsible manner to society.” Corporate Sustainability Reporting is not content marketing but a report of actions on their carbon footprint, ecosystem, supply chain, environment, energy and resource optimization.

The opportunity is to build a platform in which sustainability is integral and overarching is the basis of a sustainble company; therefore, changing the company to input and output efficiency, profitability and productivity. There is a difference between emersion and conversion. Both are applicable choices for institutions to engage yet, the choice results in different results and paths.

Companies are found of reporting by espousing terms of confidence. Sustainability embraces communication, action and interaction for increased trust to become perceptible.  The term sustainability when curated to define meaning across corporate standards will reveal what kind of organization is speaking.
